10 Life Hack All Students Need to Know

Make this lifestyle a little bit better.

From an abundance of papers to general living difficulties, it can get pretty hard to adjust to living on your own after living all these years in a well-equipped household. Starting university life can be so exciting yet equally challenging. Even the tiniest of things could become so bothersome that you end up resenting the independent life. Struggles to maintain a good work-life balance is a tedious task on its own. Moreover, running a house for oneself in a tiny space takes a lot of patience and hit-trial experimentation to get tasks done.

It is the same with everyone and you are not alone in this. We have got ten amazing life hacks that can make your life super simple. SO take a deep breath and start on.

Create more space in your cupboard

We all know how cramped up the dorm closet hanging spaces are. And with all those piles of clothing that you bring to university to play dress to impress; small spaces can really become a headache! However, we have got a super sustainable solution to it. So the next time you drink a soda don’t throw the can tabs. Use can tab to make double hanging space.

Get hold of the pen thieves

The most easily lost stationary item is the pen. And almost everyone gets confused with their own and end up owning others. Here is simple hack; switch the cartridges. Get a pack of red and blue ones and switch their cartridges to escape the confusion in future. People will think twice to attempt a robbery on your pen treasure!

Deep Sleeper Alert

It is really hard to get up on time when your parents have been your alarm clock through the past eighteen years. So the next time you set your alarm on the phone, place the phone inside a glass. It will give it a surround boost and makes sure that your dorm partner also wakes up with you!

Chilling a beer real quick

If your beer had to stay out because of inadequate space in the fridge, and you want a cold one real bad, that too in a few minutes. Wrap a damp paper around it and place it in the fridge for a while. It will be chilled in no time. You may Thank us later, after having your cool!

Tangled Cables

All the cables popping up through one night stand can get really messy and tangled! Use paper clips to sort the cables out. You won’t get confused!

Less time for prepping?

If you are short on time to know about a certain topic, Google the topic name and ppt along with it. It will give you available power point presentations on the topic which are easier to skim.

Make Google Docs your best friend!

Do your assignments on Google docs rather than relying on any other source in order not to lose your work. It easier, it’s secure and it’s shareable!

The first draft must be handwritten

Go old school and jot down the first draft of your assignment. It will help you remain focused on the topic.

Take breaks during assignments

Taking a break during assignments can refresh your mind and increase your productivity.

Slip a cutting board on a drawer

To make room at your pantry counter, slip a board on the drawer and cut your veggies conveniently!

All these hacks have been tried and tested and not a mere Google search. You must try these to make your life streamlined.

Do you have a life hack better than this, that works out wonders for you? Leave it in the comment section or tag us at @stcathys.

These Tweets Depict How We’re Feeling at This Point in the Semester

It’s a Lifestyle.

University life is more to attending lectures. The life of a student is all about juggling through assignments, lectures, career fairs clubs and societies. Life of a student may generally vary from person to person. The toppers will be mostly found in the library, the average scorers are somewhere between the library and sports areas where some of them maybe always found lazing around in the university lawns. Despite such differences, typically, students go through the same kind of mental situations and experiences. And none of them will deny it.
Here are a few tweets which rightly depict how all of the students feel at some point in a semester.

IMAGE 1

When in stress, Netflix it away! This one here talks so honestly about the student-Netflix relationship. No wonder this ultimate love-hate relationship is inseparable.

Image 3

And you thought to fill in the university applications and handling rejections was worst? Wait, till you reach there. Such stress, much wow!

Image 4

Talking about study breaks, It takes so much more than getting back to desk in time. This one speaks for all of us. Doesn’t it?

Image 5

Image 6

Even if you are prepared for the finals, there is always a news ready to explode your mind off at the professor’s desk. This one feels you all here.

Image 7

Exams are not the only stress that students endure. Budgeting is bigger. This one here shares the dilemma of being on a stressful budget.

9 Reasons to Love Living Alone During University

Everyone decides to live alone for many different reasons. You’ve either officially given up on roommates or trying to take control on this “adulting” thing. Living alone is a big step and definitely a commitment as you’re stuck alone for at least a year if you’re signing a lease. Not to worry! Here are some of the reasons why you will love living alone.

1) Cooking 24/7
large (9)
Cooking with roommates can be chaotic. Who knew all your roommates could be hungry at the exact same time as you? Cooking in an empty kitchen is so wonderful. You have all the available pots, pans and ingredients. There is also no passive aggressive arguments over washing your dishes 0.3 seconds after using them.

2) All The Storage Space
large (10)
Living alone is so ideal when you own way too many things. All the storage space is yours! You can store away all those suitcases and endless textbooks properly without feeling like you’re taking up way too much space. At our Montreal student residence, you can have all the closet space you need, without being forced to share!

3) Living In Ice, Ice, Baby
large (10)
Do you like your apartment so cold you could freeze? Well, now you can do that! There’s no one to argue with you about the temperature of the apartment. So turn that thermostat off and get yourself tons of blankets so you can be a life-size burrito!

4) Your Space, Your Rules

Because you’re living alone, there’s no need to worry about the status of shared living spaces within your dorm or apartment. It’s your space, you can do whatever you please. If you like your home so clean you don’t know what dust is, by all means. If you prefer to live in a mess, you’re more than welcome to also.

5) Judgement Free Zone

One of the best things about living alone is the fact that no one can judge you. If you’re having a bad day, go ahead and eat two full boxes of Girl Guide cookies. There is no one around to judge your lifestyle and behaviours. There are absolutely no limitations. Live your best life!

6) No Distractions
large (11)
This is such a positive to living alone! When you are swamped with school or work, you need the silence and the lack of distractions. Living alone gives you this because there is no one around you. If it is hard to appreciate this sometimes, just think of how your roommates were before one of your midterms. You’re lucky you’re living alone.

7) FREEDOM

You can do anything you want. Whenever. Wherever. You need to do laundry? Go ahead! Feel like taking a bath? Same, but you don’t have to wait for anyone to be done in the bathroom. You have the luxury of using everything in your home at your own convenience.

8) To Party, Or To Not Party?

Having guests over can be painful sometimes with roommates. Fortunately for you, when living in a Montreal student residence, having people over is something only you have to decide. You can have guests over all the time, or not at all because it is completely up to you. So if you want to throw a huge party, you can most definitely do that. If you would prefer to sit in front of your television all night, you most certainly can.

9) Independent Skills
large
It is true. Living alone can suck because you’re only relying on yourself. However, you’re learning so much about yourself by living alone! You learn about the ways you deal with problems, and the way you react to being alone. Not only you, but people around you will be impressed by your independence!

Living alone will definitely have its ups and downs, but you will end up loving it. It is a learning opportunity and a huge step that many people will take. Don’t let the fear of living alone scare you away, it’s an adventure, so get excited!

10 School Assignment Hacks

Gotta get that A.

Want to kill that essay? Well of course you do. Here at St. Cathy’s we know how hard it can be to write essay like a pro, so we’ve come up with a list of some writing and assignment hacks to help you succeed this year:

Google Scholar’s Citation Button

Don’t waste time on creating your own citations; Google Scholar actually has a citation button straight on the result page. Not only does Google Scholar give you reliable academic sources, but they’re making every aspect of the research part of assignments easier for you!

Wikepedia’s Reference Section

As we all know by now, most Profs will not accept Wikepedia as a reliable source because of it’s open-ended nature; nevertheless, Wikepedia tends to be a great starting point when trying to understand certain subjects and that information may actually be useable to you by checking the article’s reference section. This will directly lead you to a credible source for that page’s information that you will be able to use in a paper or assignment.

Read-aloud Feature on Writing Platforms

After your assignment is done, take advantage of various writing platforms’ (Google Docs, Word, Notepad, IWork, etc.) read-aloud feature. This is an extremely easy way to hear the fluidity of your text and find mistakes. Not only that, but there’s an added advantage because you will be hearing your text the way your TA. or Prof will interpret it when they’re marking it.

Grammarly

Spell check, but so much better. This app, which ad’s you may have seen on Youtube, spell checks your text and double checks it for fluidity, punctuation errors, and suggests synonyms and improved words to use in your already written text. Even better, Grammarly comes in the form of a Google Chrome application, which you can easily add to your browser for free.

Write an Outline First

Don’t waste your creativity and time on making a creative paper outline, the standard one works just fine! Furthermore, creating an outline before will ensure you answer all aspects and questions assigned in your exercise, and allows you to write in an increasingly proper manner with a great flow of information.

Plagiarism Checker

Ensure you don’t accidentally get slammed with a plagiarism accusation and check your work ahead of time with Plagiarism Checker. This website allows you to upload a document, and automatically scans it in within moments to ensure there are no excerpts that could be considered plagiarism, just like your profs and T.A.’s will do upon receiving your assignment.

Easybib

This is the perfect resource for when Google Scholar doesn’t have the above-mentioned citation button- with automatic and manual citations generated for different types of writing, lectures, and studies, all in various different styles (MLA, APA, Chicago, Scientific, Legal, Historical, etc), this website is the ideal citation machine.

Add Background Info

Help meet the word count, give some context to your papers and wow your teachers with adding background information after you state your thesis and premises in assignments or essays, who knows this could just be the difference between an A- and an A!

Speed Read

Most of the information you will need to include in your paper are in the abstract and conclusion of scholarly articles, studies, diaries, and journals. If not, reports typically have headlines within them, so instead of reading a 40-page study, navigate through carefully and save a ton of time.

10 EASY WAYS OF BEING AN EFFICIENT STUDENT

D’s get degrees, but A’s are much better.

a

Not caring about your GPA is all fun and games until we realize it actually determines a lot. With a low GPA sports teams, activities, societies, case competitions, associations, exchange programs, and even some jobs may deem you as ineligible. To help ensure your GPA stays sky-high and that you can enjoy your post-secondary experience to the fullest, we have created a list of 10 easy habits to becoming an effective student:

Don’t cram

Because forcing your eyelids open isn’t exactly considered studying.

Plan out your study time

Like budgeting, planning out your study time tends to lead to higher performance among students, this is because designating specific time for each course will not only allow you to build a routine, but also allow for excess course-review time when you’re actually caught up with your studies.

Set Goals

If you set goals in each course or during each study session,  you are sure to pinpoint the important areas of focus and study effectively by setting clear direction instead of spending time on a topic that may or may not be of serious relevance to your course.

Start with the Most Difficult Subject

Since motivation is at it’s all-time highest when you actually begin a task, start with your hardest subject first, that way it only gets easier as the session progresses.

Initiate Group Work

Group work forms a highly effective study session for a few reasons; first off it’s nice to have someone else there in case you don’t understand a concept, you complete assignments more quickly, and as you reiterate or teach lessons to one another, you’re also internalizing the subject matter which ultimately makes for a better understanding and an easier time remembering certain concepts and information.

Organize Yourself

The key to efficiency is organization, and although this may seem like an initially time-consuming, tedious job, after the initial organization having your notes, computer files, assignments, and books organized will aid in maximizing efficiency, having ready access to information, and handing in assignments promptly.

Take Great Notes

Instead of shuffling for course notes right before an exam, take great notes in the first place! This will surely make studying and organization easier due to the accessibility of your course notes, but will also aid in accumulating actual course knowledge as you’ll be rewriting concepts now and at the time of studying.

Don’t Procrastinate

It’s insanely easy to ignore that above mentioned study schedule, but if you do a little bit of studying daily, you’re sure to remember the course better, have an easier time building and connecting subject matters.

Live Healthily

Ok, not to go all elementary school on you, but getting approximately 8 hours of sleep, maintaining a generally healthy diet, and getting some regular exercise, are all immediate factors of  how much brain power, motivation, and stress- relief your body is ready to output, all seriously important components to maximizing efficiency as a student.

Read your Course Outline

I can’t stress this enough!! Not reading your course outline can be detrimental to your grade. Not only are all your important due dates and corresponding grade percentages included, but profs tend to include very important information on these sheets that they may not bother telling you in class, even if you make it to the intro lecture. An example of this may be the amount of classes you can miss without failing or whether or not neglecting to hand just 1 assignment can lead to automatic fail (this is actually a thing!).
