How to Live Your Best (Academic) Life for the Rest of the Semester

You’re in the middle of the semester. Government funding and time are running out before quickly before the stress of final exams kicks in. If you haven’t said it out loud yet, you definitely will. You need to get your life together. What better time to start then halfway through the semester? Probably at the beginning of the semester, but everyone eventually starts somewhere! Luckily for you, we will provide you with many tips to help keep you organized in school and in life. This list of school tips and college hacks will be your survival guide until the end of exam season.

1) Create Daily To-Do Lists

Daily to-do lists are both efficient and rewarding. Whether you are using your phone, your laptop or your agenda, you can keep track of the tasks that you are responsible to complete for that day. At the end of the day you will feel accomplished knowing you completed all the tasks on your list!

2) Purchase or Create A Desk Calendar
large (12)
Having a calendar that you can see every time you sit at your desk is useful. It helps you organize your week and it also helps you focus on upcoming events and assignments. As many other students, being broke comes as a characteristic of being in university, so don’t feel obligated to buy a desk calendar. Grab some construction paper and create your own calendar!

3) Treat Yo’Self!
large (13)
Don’t get too excited. I don’t mean to go spend $500 you do not have. I’m talking about giving yourself a little bit of a break by watching a Netflix episode or taking a nap. If you’ve been working intensely on a project or have been cramming in the library for long hours, you deserve a break. Give yourself time to recuperate so you have energy to continue to work hard.

4) Get Enough Sleep!
large (14)
Don’t be that person who brags about pulling all-nighters. You need your rest! It doesn’t matter if you literally nap under your study desk in the library. No one will judge you! Study shows that 83% of students perform better in academics with a full eight hour sleep. Aim high and become a nap queen or king!

5) Save Everything!
large (15)
From the syllabus to the random surprise pop quiz you did so poorly on. It doesn’t only have to be school papers, keep receipts and flyers also! Invest in folders for each of your classes and keep everything. You won’t be spending time searching for notes and power-points during final exam season! At the end of the semester you can toss out the things you don’t need but trust me when I say you will be thankful you did this when tax refunds come around!

6) Check Your Emails Daily

University is all about communicating through emails. It is important to organize your emails so that you don’t miss important emails from professors or teacher assistants. Make it a routine to check your email either once in the morning or at night. You’ll be grateful for this when you are one of the very few who are aware about the assignment extension!

7) Stay Motivated
motivation
Stay focused and motivated! There are only a couple of weeks left in the semester so give it your all. Looking for ways to stay motivated? Refer to 6 Motivation Tricks for Midterm Season.

There you have it! These tips will definitely get you on track to getting your life together. If they don’t, at least it now looks like you have your life together to everyone else so fake it ’till you make it?

9 Reasons to Love Living Alone During University

Everyone decides to live alone for many different reasons. You’ve either officially given up on roommates or trying to take control on this “adulting” thing. Living alone is a big step and definitely a commitment as you’re stuck alone for at least a year if you’re signing a lease. Not to worry! Here are some of the reasons why you will love living alone.

1) Cooking 24/7
large (9)
Cooking with roommates can be chaotic. Who knew all your roommates could be hungry at the exact same time as you? Cooking in an empty kitchen is so wonderful. You have all the available pots, pans and ingredients. There is also no passive aggressive arguments over washing your dishes 0.3 seconds after using them.

2) All The Storage Space
large (10)
Living alone is so ideal when you own way too many things. All the storage space is yours! You can store away all those suitcases and endless textbooks properly without feeling like you’re taking up way too much space. At our Montreal student residence, you can have all the closet space you need, without being forced to share!

3) Living In Ice, Ice, Baby
large (10)
Do you like your apartment so cold you could freeze? Well, now you can do that! There’s no one to argue with you about the temperature of the apartment. So turn that thermostat off and get yourself tons of blankets so you can be a life-size burrito!

4) Your Space, Your Rules

Because you’re living alone, there’s no need to worry about the status of shared living spaces within your dorm or apartment. It’s your space, you can do whatever you please. If you like your home so clean you don’t know what dust is, by all means. If you prefer to live in a mess, you’re more than welcome to also.

5) Judgement Free Zone

One of the best things about living alone is the fact that no one can judge you. If you’re having a bad day, go ahead and eat two full boxes of Girl Guide cookies. There is no one around to judge your lifestyle and behaviours. There are absolutely no limitations. Live your best life!

6) No Distractions
large (11)
This is such a positive to living alone! When you are swamped with school or work, you need the silence and the lack of distractions. Living alone gives you this because there is no one around you. If it is hard to appreciate this sometimes, just think of how your roommates were before one of your midterms. You’re lucky you’re living alone.

7) FREEDOM

You can do anything you want. Whenever. Wherever. You need to do laundry? Go ahead! Feel like taking a bath? Same, but you don’t have to wait for anyone to be done in the bathroom. You have the luxury of using everything in your home at your own convenience.

8) To Party, Or To Not Party?

Having guests over can be painful sometimes with roommates. Fortunately for you, when living in a Montreal student residence, having people over is something only you have to decide. You can have guests over all the time, or not at all because it is completely up to you. So if you want to throw a huge party, you can most definitely do that. If you would prefer to sit in front of your television all night, you most certainly can.

9) Independent Skills
large
It is true. Living alone can suck because you’re only relying on yourself. However, you’re learning so much about yourself by living alone! You learn about the ways you deal with problems, and the way you react to being alone. Not only you, but people around you will be impressed by your independence!

Living alone will definitely have its ups and downs, but you will end up loving it. It is a learning opportunity and a huge step that many people will take. Don’t let the fear of living alone scare you away, it’s an adventure, so get excited!

Furniture/Decorations Ideas That Are Affordable For a Student Residence

Moving out is all fun and games until you own no more than a mattress. Furnishing an apartment can be tough when you don’t have the funds to purchase an entirely new living room. When seeking out furniture, remember that it will only be in your student house for a maximum of four years. Don’t break the bank for furniture! Here are some tips on seeking out affordable furniture.

1) Furnished Apartments
603391_135843066608526_496378897_n
This option is super simple. Your cost of rent will be a little higher because the entire apartment is furnished unless of course, you join us at St Cathy’s Montreal Student Residence with furnished apartments at the fraction of a studio apartment price. Nonetheless, furnished accommodations are ideal for students who are unable to move some of their own furniture to their new house. It is also ideal for students who aren’t looking to add the stress of furnishing a home. Furnished apartments are definitely super fun but take into consideration your budget for rent. Click here to learn more.

2) Multi-Purpose Furniture
large (4)
Multi-purpose furniture is super convenient because you’re getting two options for the price of one! For example, if you’re purchasing a couch, look for a sofa that doubles as a pull-out couch. You will be getting both a bed and a couch for the cost of one. While it may not be ideal to sleep on a pull-out couch, you won’t have to spend money right away to buy a bed also!

3) City-Wide Garage Sales
large (5)
Specifically, in the summer, seek out city-wide garage sales! Not only are they fun, but you will definitely find lots of furniture and decorations that you can afford. Be prepared to spend more than you expect because people have so many things to sell and you’ll just want it all!

4) Kijiji Is Your Friend
kijiji
It may feel sketchy or unsafe sometimes to purchase furniture, appliances, or decorations off of someone online, but Kijiji is by far the safest out of all. Use the search engine to narrow down the type of items you need, the preferred location, and the maximum budget. You will be surprised with the amount of options you have!

5) Old Tenants = New Friends

If you’re lucky enough to meet the old tenants of your potential new home, you are truly blessed. When moving, getting rid of a lot of things becomes part of the game. There is a good chance that the previous tenants are looking to sell some of their items that you may need in your Montreal student residence room, such as an ironing board or a kettle. Ask them about their move and hopefully they’ll give you a good price on some of the things they’re getting rid of.

6) IKEA Wild Night Sale
large (6)
Most IKEA’s will participate in an annual student night sale. This sale will be your lifesaver when buying furniture. IKEA will drop their prices quite a bit for this specific night because of the amount of students that participate in the event. Do everything in your power to not buy everything you see! While it is new furniture, this will be a benefit when and if you decide to sell it in the future. If you are staying in a Montreal student residence, this can be a great chance to spice up your room with some art and decorations.

7) On Campus Residence Move Out Sale

Most universities and colleges host an event where students can sell the things they don’t need. While it might not be couches and beds, you may be able to find bookshelves and smaller appliances such as toasters for cheaper!

Moving into a university off-campus Montreal student residence is all apart of the experience. No one said the experience had to be more expensive than it already is! Take these options into consideration and you will end up with a beautiful room that you’ll be proud of.

6 Ways to Motivate the #StudyGrind

It’s that time of year again! The new school year is begining, and somehow you already feel mentally drained, your motivation has completely disappeared, and you the semester will finish you before you finish it. You’re struggling with the idea of staying driven to the very end of exams. It’s difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel but with these 6 tricks, your motivation will be back and here to stay until the end of the semester.

1) Give yourself a break

If you’re completely burnt out, it will show in your work. You want to give the best you can possibly give and to do so, you need to be at 100%. Give yourself a break! Take a nap, watch an episode of a television show you enjoy. Remember that it is just a break, so don’t spend the entire day taking a break.

2) Airplane Mode Is Your Best Friend

It is easy to get carried away with social media apps that are available right on your phone. As exciting as it is to view photos of golden retrievers on Instagram, your schoolwork will not get done with your phone sitting on your desk. Put your phone on airplane mode and putit in a drawer. As a way to encourage yourself to get work done, place an hourly timer to use your phone for 15 minutes after every hour as a motivation mechanism!

3) Set All The Goals!

As humans, we love the feeling of accomplishment and encouragement. Think about that feeling of closing all those tabs on your laptop after finishing an assignment. Now, think about the feeling of crossing that assignment off your to-do list. There are very few things that feel as good as this! Set goals, big or small, for yourself to keep yourself motivated and encouraged to keep working.

4) Treat Your Body Like A Temple

As students, we sometimes forget that broccoli is important. Some might have not seen a piece of broccoli since they’ve started university. It is difficult to meal prep and make meals that are healthy, however, it is not hard to at least try and eat a little better. Cut back on the endless instant noodles and feed yourself some brain food so that you’re awake while you’re studying. The more energy you have, the more you will get done and feel accomplished!

5) Change Up Your Study Style

Studying can be quite boring especially if you have been studying the exact same way for as long as you can remember. Get out of your comfort zone and try group studying. It will encourage you to meet some of your classmates and will potentially benefit you as it will be numerous brains studying together as opposed to just one.

6) Don’t Over Do It

The brain can stay focused for about five to six hours. The minute you stop retaining information is the minute you should take a break. You will be wasting your own time trying to stay focused and will only result in frustration from the lack of retaining. Keep your motivation and encouragement by not overdoing it! Try to change it up with some physical activity before getting back to your studies.

5 Ways to get A’s this Semester

Back to the grind…

Guys, we have some bad news … as you’ve probably noticed, school is about to start back up once again. Instead of crying over the end of everyone’s favorite season and the omnipresent workload, we’ve decided to go into it with a positive frame of mind this year. With that in mind, we’ve come up with a list of 5 tactics to ensure you get the best grades yet in all of your classes this semester.

Stay Organized

Whether your organizational weapon of choice is a giant calendar, iPhone, or agenda, staying organized is crucial for a successful semester. Not only will you be able to track important dates and schedule studying time, but with a standardized scheduling system, you will have peace of mind due to a direct overview of all of your tasks, commitments, and due dates.

Find your Workflow

One of the hardest parts of getting your semester in order is finding your workflow. From in-lecture reviews, reading, writing assignments, and studying for tests/quizzes/exams, it’s no secret that students are bombarded with work. However, figuring out which ways you work best make tackling this workload a breeze. Map out your workflow, and stick with it! Need some extra guidance? Try using Trello.

Schedule Studying Time

This goes without saying, the more you study, the better you will do on exams and tests. Even if it’s once a week to review the notes you’ve taken and concepts you’ve covered in your lecture, scheduling study time is an inherently critical activity when aiming for high grades. You’ll be thanking yourself when you no longer feel the need to stay up all night, cramming for the next morning’s midterm. No matter how many classes you’re taking on this semester, scheduling study time will help you get that A! Do you prefer studying on-the-go? Check out Cram (thank us later).

Live Healthily

This probably isn’t the first you’re hearing of a healthy lifestyle being relative to good grades. This is because proper sleep and healthy food ensure your brain is in an optimal state to learn and retain information, and your energy levels are where they should be. Nothing’s worse than feeling drained and still having a 3-hour lecture to attend before going home…

Attend your Classes

Ok, this one goes without saying, yet may be the hardest of them all. Attendance and good grades are inextricable from one another. Despite cold wintery mornings, getting out of bed and to class is guaranteed to improve your grades. Feeling like skipping out on some readings? All the more reasons to get your butt to classes! You won’t regret it.

What are your favorite tricks to ensure good grades in your classes? Let us know in the comment section below or by tagging @stcathys on social media.

You’ll Never Guess What Drake is Pouring Money Into Now

Straight out the 6.

World renowned Candian rapper Drake is about as familiar with investing in projects and partnering with companies as he is with promoting his home base, Toronto (#sixvibes). From the Sher club and Virgina Brand Whiskey to investing in tech start ups and acting as a brand ambassador for the Raptors, Drake has embarked on countless business ventures while building his brand. But you’ll never guess what his latest LA-based project is…

Drake’s latest thing is literally paying for giant billboards all over LA. What do these billboards say you may wonder? Well, they’re promoting Canada’s ability to get along wih one another – how relevant. Although these billboards are actually an ad campaign to promote his latest OVO merch, kudos to Drake for showing his Canadian pride (and maybe inspiring some envy among our southern neighbours).

19127ced4e3c9ccd8629fd7809238b7d713bc1c0

These billboards have caused a slight bit of controversy for LA residents and Americans in general – from capitalizing on tragedy as a promotion tool to the word Canada not being capitalized, these signs seem to be making people mad. That being said, we love them! What do you think about Drake’s latest ad campaign? Let us know what you think in the comment section below or by tagging @stcathys on social media.
