Student Success: 6 Tips to Wake up Before 6am and Effectively Start Your Day

Goodmorning Sunshine!

You know those crazy student’s who show up to 8:30 class early and look alive? Well, you can become a morning person too. Students can get tasks done easier by waking up early before their peers and the online world. Waking up early can also allow you to prevent missing daily tasks, increasing student success. There are numerous times I did not wake up early for the walk-in-clinic or sent an email too late for a response that same day. Keep reading for tips to maintain this early morning habit.

1. Beat your alarm

Put your alarm across the room to force yourself to get out of bed. Student’s love to hit the snooze button and this prevents that. If you are someone who listens to music before you sleep, you can also set an alarm on your computer and place it across the room. Putting a glass of water beside your alarm and chugging will also help you wake up. Water fires up your metabolism and rehydrates your body which will improve your alertness.

2. Stay warm

Similarly, winter can make your room an icebox so if you don’t like waking up in the cold prepare the night before. Put a sweater, sweats and slippers (or socks) beside your bed so you can put them on while you’re still under the covers. Taking a hot shower can have the same effect. Prepping your coffee and tea the night before can also decrease the amount of time it takes to make your hot caffeinated drink and warm your body up.

3. Wake up at the same time

Plan to always wake up at the same time, despite the time you go to bed. If you have trouble doing this the first night, its okay. The less sleep you get the first night will make you more tired the next, and you will be able to regain the lost sleep. Tracking your sleep cycles will allow you to wake up without feeling tired. Tools like Sleep Calculator are a great resource to track what time you should go to bed. Even if you pull an all-nighter the night before you can plan to sleep for one full sleep cycle and somewhat make it through the day.

4. Plan a to-do list

Write a to-do list the night before. Minimize the amount of time you need to get ready and eat breakfast if you have a heavy workload. If you need a big long breakfast to wake yourself up then plan your time around that. Extra time needed for serious tasks can be saved by doing meal prep for lunch and choosing the “right” outfit the night before. If to-do lists stress you out try doing a rolling-list which breaks up your projects into steps. Instead of completing a full assignment you can divide your time to focus on your readings, studying, and completing a portion of your assignments.

5. Prepare your work

If you have certain readings you need to do, have them saved and open on your laptop. For textbooks, just have the right chapter open. For assignments, have the rubric, objective, citation guideline and any research you have already done, open. Structure your work by what you are most excited about or the easiest to the least exciting. When you get to the harder and denser work you will already be focused and in the zone.

6. Eat a healthy breakfast

Last but not least, eat a well-balanced breakfast. Some days I could get away with a typical student diet of coffee or leftover pizza but if you have a lot of stuff to do, feed your brain! Fruits have natural sugars that will wake you up and eggs, oatmeal, peanut butter, and yogurt will fill your stomach so you can wake up and focus on your tasks. Check out other brain foods to boost your focus on our blog here.

Starting your mornings right can help you accomplish more tasks than you would complete during the entire day. Plan your days right and boost your productivity to finally beat mornings and make it to class on time.

One of the best parts about committing to tertiary education is the fact that ambitious students are exposed to endless opportunities. Whether it be Greek societies, internships abroad, or start-up competitions, countless opportunities are available for seeking students. One especially great program available to students is the exchange program. Students get to study abroad for a semester to a year at amazing educational institutions while having the opportunity to learn about a new culture and language, make great friends, and experience all the perks of living in another country. Most students would undoubtedly be interested in such opportunities – if it wasn’t for the cost burden. Studying abroad can be especially pricey – especially when considering international tuition fees. Luckily, there are schools all over the world right now that offer free tuition (yep, literally FREE TUITION). If you’re not already packing your bags, you will be after reading which amazing countries offer free/very cheap tuition to international students.

10 EASY WAYS OF BEING AN EFFICIENT STUDENT

D’s get degrees, but A’s are much better.

a

Not caring about your GPA is all fun and games until we realize it actually determines a lot. With a low GPA sports teams, activities, societies, case competitions, associations, exchange programs, and even some jobs may deem you as ineligible. To help ensure your GPA stays sky-high and that you can enjoy your post-secondary experience to the fullest, we have created a list of 10 easy habits to becoming an effective student:

Don’t cram

Because forcing your eyelids open isn’t exactly considered studying.

Plan out your study time

Like budgeting, planning out your study time tends to lead to higher performance among students, this is because designating specific time for each course will not only allow you to build a routine, but also allow for excess course-review time when you’re actually caught up with your studies.

Set Goals

If you set goals in each course or during each study session,  you are sure to pinpoint the important areas of focus and study effectively by setting clear direction instead of spending time on a topic that may or may not be of serious relevance to your course.

Start with the Most Difficult Subject

Since motivation is at it’s all-time highest when you actually begin a task, start with your hardest subject first, that way it only gets easier as the session progresses.

Initiate Group Work

Group work forms a highly effective study session for a few reasons; first off it’s nice to have someone else there in case you don’t understand a concept, you complete assignments more quickly, and as you reiterate or teach lessons to one another, you’re also internalizing the subject matter which ultimately makes for a better understanding and an easier time remembering certain concepts and information.

Organize Yourself

The key to efficiency is organization, and although this may seem like an initially time-consuming, tedious job, after the initial organization having your notes, computer files, assignments, and books organized will aid in maximizing efficiency, having ready access to information, and handing in assignments promptly.

Take Great Notes

Instead of shuffling for course notes right before an exam, take great notes in the first place! This will surely make studying and organization easier due to the accessibility of your course notes, but will also aid in accumulating actual course knowledge as you’ll be rewriting concepts now and at the time of studying.

Don’t Procrastinate

It’s insanely easy to ignore that above mentioned study schedule, but if you do a little bit of studying daily, you’re sure to remember the course better, have an easier time building and connecting subject matters.

Live Healthily

Ok, not to go all elementary school on you, but getting approximately 8 hours of sleep, maintaining a generally healthy diet, and getting some regular exercise, are all immediate factors of  how much brain power, motivation, and stress- relief your body is ready to output, all seriously important components to maximizing efficiency as a student.

Read your Course Outline

I can’t stress this enough!! Not reading your course outline can be detrimental to your grade. Not only are all your important due dates and corresponding grade percentages included, but profs tend to include very important information on these sheets that they may not bother telling you in class, even if you make it to the intro lecture. An example of this may be the amount of classes you can miss without failing or whether or not neglecting to hand just 1 assignment can lead to automatic fail (this is actually a thing!).

HABITS OF THE WORLD’S MOST SUCCESSFUL

We’re all chasing the good life.

September is quickly approaching, so what better time for a little inspo? The sky’s the limit when you work hard and lead your life with healthy habits- which is why we have created this list of the most common habits among successful people:

Read

reading

Successful businessmen such as Mark Cuban, and Bill Gates, among many other businessmen and women suggest reading for at least an hour daily.  Not only are they focusing constantly learning and improving (instead of who died on Game of Thrones this week), but also allow their reading to be increasingly effective by highlighting relevant information for future application.

Wake Up Early

wake up early

Many successful people such as Robert Iger (CEO of Disney), Tim Cook (CEO of Apple), and businessman Kevin O’Leary swear by waking up early. This is because the first half of your day is typically more productive, and your days result in having more time to spend working on your project, passion, or craft.

Get/Stay Active

stay active

Getting active at least once a day is not only good for your body, but as Anna Wintour (Editor in Chief of Vogue) points out, it can also double as a way to clear your mind, and a time for one to indulge in meditation. This can help you develop clearer ideas and goals, one of the foundations of success- in any field. Arnold Schwarzenegger also swears by this.

anna wintour stay active

Write Down your Goals

goals

Writing has been scientifically proven as the most clear form of communicating a thought- and this is no exceptions when it comes to your personal thoughts. The most effective way to set goals, as noticed by Napolean Hill of Think and Grow Rich and Oprah, is by writing them down- they are not only mentally apparent, but also physically.

Budget

budget

The most efficient way to not spend all of your money is to budget. This will allow you to get a solid overview of your monthly spending habits, thus allowing you to create an increasingly better plan on how to save, spend, and invest your money. These are the wise paraphrased words of  financial planner, and founder of the company Financially Wise Women Brittney Castro.

Eat Healthy

eat healthy

Successful people tend to realize that the food you decide to intake is then fuel, well, fueling your body- the healthier, the better. There are many reasons for this, but a main one being that what you eat truly affects productivity and energy levels, greatly. Healthy food also relates directly to better decision making, less stress, and improved memory capabilities. Just ask Victoria Beckham, the former spice girl and current fashion designer worth over 300 million (and that’s w/o David).

Live Minimally- Say No

live minimally

Many successful people are able to say no. Whether it be to negativity, an extra drink/ night out, or on a project that eventually will astray them from their goals- they can say no. This permits them to stay laser focused on their own projects, and permits learning to view essentials over luxuries- and exercise living within their current means. Warren Buffet is especially famous for endorsing both saying no and living within his means as tips for success;

  • “If you buy things you don’t need, you will soon sell things you need.” – Warren Buffett
  • “The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything.”Warren Buffett

Outsource Your Busy Work

outsource busy work

No we’re not talking about that paper, but what is being said is this: don’t waste your time trying to do something you’re not good at. This may sound harsh, but in reality it just means focus on the areas you excel in, and in your areas of weakness and busy work; outsource. Many successful business people have adapted this method, Peter Drucker being a veteran in outsourcing back in 1989, and today left a legacy as an author, management consultant, and educator- best known today as the Peter F. Drucker School of Management in the U.K..
