How to Survive Dreaded Summer Courses 101

Where summer courses are generally offered to ‘lighten’ up the usual semester load, they can also totally eat up your summer break! You may want to enjoy volleyball at a beach like your friends but inside you know you will have to work on numerical analysis. Even the thought is cringe-worthy!

With that in mind, here are few tips that can help you get through the courses without missing on the summer fun!

Two is Enough

Student Studying Hard Exam and Sleeping on Books, Tired Girl Read Difficult Book in Library

Keep your cool with taking the courses!  Since you will be staying back in the campus you would want to take as many courses as possible, but practically it is no good. Take no more than two courses considering the fact that you are already cramming the sixteen weeks of coursework into 8 weeks. A little loose routine will let you breathe through because at the end we all need breaks.

Try Learning Online

OnlineLearning-OntarioLearn-GettyImages-525757759

Who would want to wake up early in holidays to attend the class? No one! Absolutely, no one. Since you are on a break, and most summer classes start early, consider taking online classes.  If you have a good attention span and you are kind of a pro at self-studying then it shouldn’t be a great deal for you. Rather, it will take half the burden off you!

A 100 $ Tip

You may take courses that you would want to get through quickly. For a fact some people aren’t comfortable with public speaking. You may take such courses during the summer since you won’t have to go through the turmoil of speaking between a big strength and also the duration will be relatively shorter.

Keep Yourself Occupied

1a7a588d482bccbac46c5b9867d079c5fc6d67ad.jpg_1200x630

It is hard to accept the fact that you will be staying on the campus where others will be carrying out their vacation plans. The mere thought makes it agitated enough. It is better to accept it sooner to make it easier on yourself. Try making lots of plans so you are on your toes for completion. This way, you will hardly get time to procrastinate and won’t let the weird thoughts wander in your brain. Try finding a nearby activity that you can attend daily in addition to dry coursework!

Have Fun with Sun

Immersing yourself in the land of books can be very depressing. Enjoy the sunlight streaming through the glass or somewhere outside. It will make you more productive and less depressed about the fact that you have an essay to finish. Take a ride on the bike to classes or try arranging a study group in a park!

With these tips, you may have a little less school-centric summer, although we don’t promise a cent percent result. That comes from the inside. So, it is best that you take mental breaks and accept your fate; after all it is you, who signed up for it!

5 Study Hacks you’ve Been Missing Out On

Get those A’s.

Studying can sometimes get really tricky. It shouldn’t be hard generally but depending on the circumstances and situations it can take a toll on your brain. There are times when you can cover the hardest of subjects within no time and then there are instances where your mind lingers on and on the simplest of things. That’s all about the mood of the brain and how it wants to react to the situation. It is like a stubborn child dragging in the aisle of the supermarket.

Take a walk

1

It is said that exercise boosts your memory and brain functions. Taking a walk before studying can freshen up the brain by ten times. Exercising induce endorphins, a happy hormone, that leaves the brain fresh and healthy for that time. So the next time you are going to start studying, kick start your brain by a twenty-minute brisk walk inside a room. It’s even better that you go out and take a stroll, change of scenery and a bit of fresh air can also do the magic.

Chew a gum

2

Chomping on a gum doesn’t hold any side effect. It is also known to be a brain booster, of course not for its nutritional value but it keeps the brain attentive. Scientists have deduced that it makes the brain work promptly. The act of chewing keeps the brain awake and focused. The downside to this hack is this will only work for shorter periods. But if you have the stamina to chomp for hours, go ahead you have got this!

Speak out loud, rather than reading

3

Speak your lessons aloud! It is said that it is 50% more likely to remember something if you speak out loud instead of simply reading it over and over again. This might seem a little crazy to you but the brain processes the information quicker when interpreted at loud volumes.

Reward yourself with a treat

4

Give yourself with a milestone treat! Assign yourselves short milestones and finish them in time. Keep a pack of gummy bears, kisses or any small treat that you like. And pop one after every milestone. That will keep you motivated and the greed of treats will keep you going. Keeping a high sugar treat will also be an instant boost to the brain.

Teach Yourself

5

This one always works! Act like you are a teacher delivering a lesson. Think of an imaginary class in front of you and prepare the topic and deliver the lesson. You may also ask questions, give hints to your imaginary students and answer on their behalf. You may jot down the key points on board to engage your students (your own brain).

These are the top five hacks that have worked for us for ages. If you have any hack that works exclusively for you, feel free to share it, there is a possibility, that it could come handy for any other student as well.

Student Success: 6 Tips to Wake up Before 6am and Effectively Start Your Day

Goodmorning Sunshine!

You know those crazy student’s who show up to 8:30 class early and look alive? Well, you can become a morning person too. Students can get tasks done easier by waking up early before their peers and the online world. Waking up early can also allow you to prevent missing daily tasks, increasing student success. There are numerous times I did not wake up early for the walk-in-clinic or sent an email too late for a response that same day. Keep reading for tips to maintain this early morning habit.

1. Beat your alarm

Put your alarm across the room to force yourself to get out of bed. Student’s love to hit the snooze button and this prevents that. If you are someone who listens to music before you sleep, you can also set an alarm on your computer and place it across the room. Putting a glass of water beside your alarm and chugging will also help you wake up. Water fires up your metabolism and rehydrates your body which will improve your alertness.

2. Stay warm

Similarly, winter can make your room an icebox so if you don’t like waking up in the cold prepare the night before. Put a sweater, sweats and slippers (or socks) beside your bed so you can put them on while you’re still under the covers. Taking a hot shower can have the same effect. Prepping your coffee and tea the night before can also decrease the amount of time it takes to make your hot caffeinated drink and warm your body up.

3. Wake up at the same time

Plan to always wake up at the same time, despite the time you go to bed. If you have trouble doing this the first night, its okay. The less sleep you get the first night will make you more tired the next, and you will be able to regain the lost sleep. Tracking your sleep cycles will allow you to wake up without feeling tired. Tools like Sleep Calculator are a great resource to track what time you should go to bed. Even if you pull an all-nighter the night before you can plan to sleep for one full sleep cycle and somewhat make it through the day.

4. Plan a to-do list

Write a to-do list the night before. Minimize the amount of time you need to get ready and eat breakfast if you have a heavy workload. If you need a big long breakfast to wake yourself up then plan your time around that. Extra time needed for serious tasks can be saved by doing meal prep for lunch and choosing the “right” outfit the night before. If to-do lists stress you out try doing a rolling-list which breaks up your projects into steps. Instead of completing a full assignment you can divide your time to focus on your readings, studying, and completing a portion of your assignments.

5. Prepare your work

If you have certain readings you need to do, have them saved and open on your laptop. For textbooks, just have the right chapter open. For assignments, have the rubric, objective, citation guideline and any research you have already done, open. Structure your work by what you are most excited about or the easiest to the least exciting. When you get to the harder and denser work you will already be focused and in the zone.

6. Eat a healthy breakfast

Last but not least, eat a well-balanced breakfast. Some days I could get away with a typical student diet of coffee or leftover pizza but if you have a lot of stuff to do, feed your brain! Fruits have natural sugars that will wake you up and eggs, oatmeal, peanut butter, and yogurt will fill your stomach so you can wake up and focus on your tasks. Check out other brain foods to boost your focus on our blog here.

Starting your mornings right can help you accomplish more tasks than you would complete during the entire day. Plan your days right and boost your productivity to finally beat mornings and make it to class on time.
